A little bit about myself and why I started this amazing club.
I worked in Aston Fields post office for three years and then became officer in charge for two years. This is how I got my love for the older generation. Every Monday morning they would queue for their pensions. We would have a real laugh and a good chat. I realised that a lot of elderly people were extremely lonely and the only time they got to speak to anyone was in the queue at the post office.
After much thought I decided a charge of career was called for. I then began working at Age UK Bromsgrove. Starting off with helping run the weekend day clubs for people with dementia, I also did their sitting service where I would sit with the person while their carer had a few hours break.
A vacancy become available at their day clubs which I applied for and was accepted for the position. I eventually ended up running both clubs and along with Bromsgrove Mental Health Team ran a monthly cafe for people with dementia and their carers. Unfortunately due to financial reasons Age UK had to close their day clubs. I was extremely upset about this and wondered what would become of all the people and the lovely volunteers that helped me.
After much though and apprehension I decided to look for a premises and start my own clubs. Thats now history and I run 3 days a week at Lickey End Social Club that has turned out to be really successful. After much pressure from clients I was persuaded to continue the dementia cafe. Thats also held at the Lickey End Club on the first Monday of every month.
I thoroughly enjoy running all my clubs and would like to publicly thank my volunteers that help me, I wouldn’t be able to do it without them. Anyone thinking of volunteering you will find it very rewarding and fun.
